8/16/2008 - 8/20/2008Festival of Folk Arts
Budapest,
Hungary
Staged within the walls of Buda Castle - A World Heritage Site resembling a medieval town within a city - this exhibition of crafts enjoys an enviable location with views of the River Danube and both the Buda and Pest parts of the city. Billed as a 'forum of living folk art', the festival includes demonstrations and exhibitions of traditional folk art and craftwork from all over Hungary, with examples available for purchase. Visitors are entertained by folk music and dancers in costume, puppet shows and street theatre performances. There are demonstrations by craftsmen for children and numerous play centres to keep younger visitors amused. The event revolves around St Stephen's Day on 20 August when there is a parade of master craftsmen through the streets of Buda and the ceremonial blessing of freshly baked bread. In the evening, there is music and dancing in various halls and restaurants across the city.
