3/01/2009 - 3/31/2009Holy Week
Antigua Guatemala,
Guatemala
Easter week, is celebrated throughout the country, but in the Spanish colonial city of Antigua Guatemala the celebrations are particularly impressive. The broad, cobbled streets of the former capital, lined with ochre-painted mansions and magnificent churches and monasteries, are carpeted during Easter with petals, pine needles and variegated leaves. The religious brotherhoods (cofradias) from the many churches organise their own part in the processions, often wearing biblical dress and carrying immense decorated biers with figures of Christ and the Madonna. Scenes of pageantry, colour and religious fervour are witnessed from Palm Sunday through Holy Thursday and Good Friday to Easter Sunday.
