2/01/2008 - 2/04/2008Carnival & Clean Monday
Athens,
Greece
Athens celebrates carnival in the run up to Orthodox Lent and closes, on the first day of Lent, with the traditional Clean Monday (Kathara Deftera). This signals the start of a spell of abstinence with a traditional house clearout. First, though, the fun. The city lays on a party that often includes Argentine tango dancing, Greek music concerts, costume contests, and a set of entertainments for children with maypoles, stilt-walkers, jugglers and many more surprises. The events, most of which take place on the weekend before Lent, change each year and are announced beforehand. A special programme for Kathara Deftera includes the traditional serving of Lenten dishes, the flying of kites and much dancing and singing
