6/01/2009 - 6/30/2009Miaoulis Festival
Hydra Town,
Greece
The festival celebrates the achievements of the great Admiral Miaoulis, a Hydriot hero of the War of Independence. Thanks in part to his naval victory, Greece finally shook off the yoke of Turkish rule. Miaoulis is celebrated with brass bands, cultural events, athletic contests, folk dances, fireworks and late night partying. A 'water theatre' takes place in the town harbour, where the great sea battle is represented with the burning of a Turkish flagship.
