Dusseldorf's Christmas market comes in two parts, the Nikolaus market in the Altstadt and another centred on Schadowplatz. The distinctive 'gingerbread houses' of its 150 stalls are spread among four city centre squares, each one with its own particular character. Meanwhile, there is skating fun for all the family on the ice rink set up at the end of Konigsallee. A wide variety of craft items, ornaments and gifts is on sale from stalls that line the narrow winding streets. Cinnamon cakes and mulled red wine are an indispensable part of celebrations, along with the festively-decorated shop windows and the Christmas entertainment.
