11/30/2009 - 12/20/2009Christmas Market
Leipzig,
Germany
Steeped in tradition, the Leipzig Christmas Market dates all the way back to 1767. The main centre for the activities is the spacious and magnificent Market square, with row upon row of illuminated stalls set out against the backdrop of the Old Town Hall. A programme of entertainment and diversions keep large crowds entertained in between sessions of shopping and eating. The famous choir of Saint Thomas Church performs each year and other churches in the vicinity give organ recitals. Popular with children, there are the delights to be discovered at the fairytale forest, in the Bethlehem market, and at the immense freestanding Advent calendar that counts down the days to Christmas. There's also an open-air ice rink in the square in front of the city's main railway station.
