11/01/2009 - 12/31/2009Christmas Market
Rostock,
Germany
The Christmas Market in the old quarter of Rostock is the biggest fair of its kind in northern Germany. The official opening is carried out by Father Christmas himself who, unusually, arrives in the town harbour by boat. Christmas shoppers find plenty of unusual gifts on offer and, if peckish, Rostock's famous smoked sausages are sold sizzling hot from many of the vendors. Roast wild boar, roasted almonds in toffee, mulled wine and many more culinary delicacies are on offer to tickle the taste buds. A fairytale castle is erected on University Square, a focus for many of the Christmas activities. The Church of Saint Mary hosts a medieval market and the fairytale forest is a magnet to children.
