A national holiday throughout America, the Martin Luther King Jr Holiday celebrates the life and legacy of a man who brought hope and healing to America during the turbulent time of the civil rights movement of the 1960s. Commemorative events take place in various venues and locations in King's hometown of Atlanta and there is a special programme of events at the King Center. Events include speeches, live orchestras, religious services and the annual 'Salute to Greatness Awards Dinner', where those who have worked towards furthering peace and understanding are acknowledged. The holiday is always held on the third Monday in January and also marks Martin Luther King Jr's birthday - 15 January 1929.
