Augusta,
United States
Cutting a herd is a skill that dates back to the old ranching days of the 19th century when ranchers would need to separate or "cut" certain cows from the herd because of illness or to take to market. Trained horses are integral to successfully cutting a herd and informal competitions developed amongst ranchers in the southwest of America as far back as 1880. The tradition continued for many years before it became a formal event in 1980 when the first Augusta Futurity was held. It has grown in popularity every year ever since and now attracts visitors from across the region.
