7/04/2008 - 7/26/2008Avignon Festival
Avignon,
France
The Avignon Festival was first held in 1947 when the French actor and director Jean Vilar staged three works previously unknown to the French public at the spectacular Popes' Palace (Palais des Papes). Over the course of its history, the festival has grown to become a major cultural event in the region, attracting performers and visitors from all over the world. Its pioneering spirit is still at the heart of the festival where the emphasis is on bringing experimental theatre to a wider audience. Away from the theatre, there is a lively procession of fire eaters and jugglers that draw large crowds as they snake their way through the streets to the Popes' Palace. The city also hosts a parallel festival called the Festival Off, which enables smaller acts to perform wherever they can, creating a truly spectacular atmosphere.
