Helsinki Day is celebrated each year on 12 June to mark the anniversary of the city's foundation by King Gustav I of Sweden in 1550. Helsinki Day began in 1959, and since 1992 has always been held on 12 June, regardless of the day of the week. The city puts on a diverse programme of events, including free admission to museums and exhibitions and lavish events in the public parks and squares. Early in the morning, there's free coffee and traditional Helsinki Day rhubarb tart in Railway Square. Throughout the day the city is filled with music, magic, handicrafts, prize-givings and dance. You have no choice but to join in
