    1/01/2008 - 12/31/2008Ceremony of the Keys

    London, United Kingdom
Each evening, visitors assemble at the Tower of London to watch the Ceremony of the Keys - an age-old ritual that has taken place at the famous landmark each night for at least the last 700 years. At various points in its history, the Tower of London has been a Royal Palace, Royal Mint and home to the Crown Regalia and still today it is home to the Crown Jewels, so securing the premises each night is an important event that is carried out by the Chief Yeoman Warder. Always beginning at 2153 each evening, the symbolic event lasts precisely 7 minutes as the Warder makes his way to lock the heavy wooden gates carrying the keys in one hand and brass lantern in the other

    Themes: History
Hours: The ceremony takes place at 2153 each evening
Cost: Free of charge but spectators must have a date stamped ticket to watch the event which must be applied for in advance. Applications must be made in writing (to the address below), at least two months in advance (three months for June-August) and must be accompanied by a self-addressed envelope, together with the requisite British postage stamps, or a minimum of two International Reply Coupons (Coupon-response International)
