6/23/2009 - 6/23/2009Midsummer's Eve
Countrywide,
Denmark
Celebrated throughout Scandinavia, Midsummer is the celebration of the Summer Solstice which marks the longest day of the year. It is an ancient practice which dates back to pre-Christian times and has many rituals that are closely associated with nature and the hope for a good harvest in the autumn. In Denmark the day also marks the birthday of John the Baptist and is characterised by a day of celebrations and usually a big meal with friends, families and loved ones. After the meal, many people head to local Midsummer Eve parties where fires are traditionally lit on beaches and lakesides to ward off evil spirits. The assembled crowds also usually sing Holger Drachmann's 'Midsommervise' - Denmark's traditional Midsummer Song.
