12/05/2009 - 12/05/2009Saint Nicholas' Eve
Prague,
Czech Republic
The Santa character was modelled, as we know, on Saint Nicholas. On the eve of the saint's day (known locally as 'Little Christmas'), reincarnations of the jolly fellow roll through the streets of the city handing out sweets to kids and dropping into bars for a beer. Really, it is only men dressed to look like Father Christmas, so don't be fooled. The legions of santas, each with their accompanying angel or devil, form an interesting and entertaining part of the festive season in Prague. The three characters represent the religious kingpins of confession (Nicholas), punishment (the devil) and reward (the angel). Make friends with an angel for a treat; the devil doles out coal.
