The forerunner of New Year's Eve, the festival of Saint Sylvester sees in the New Year in many cities of central Europe. It was in Prague, though, that the saint was born and where the eve of his day is observed with the most enthusiasm. The religious component to the festival tends to be overshadowed by the celebrations and feasting and drinking, the wild parties and firework displays that are the enduring traditions of this last night of the year.
