New Year's Eve is celebrated in traditional festive style throughout Croatia with social gatherings in houses, hotels, discos and numerous parties. Many of the larger towns and cities also host large public firework displays on the stroke of midnight. Dubrovnik, Hvar and Split are amongst some of the country's best places to enjoy the New Year's Eve frolics. In the latter, it remains customary to play 'picigin' (keeping a ball aloft whilst splashing about in the sea) regardless of weather conditions.
