1/01/2010 - 1/31/2010Chinese New Year
Countrywide,
China
The Chinese New Year is, without doubt, China's biggest occasion of the year, and it is celebrated over the whole country. It is a time to be with friends, families and loved ones and many workers try to make the long journey home to spend the festive season with their families. Preparations usually take place in the month leading up to the big night when presents are wrapped, decorations are put up and special food is prepared. Celebratory events take place throughout the country and particularly in the bigger towns and cities where visitors can expect fireworks displays, traditional lion and dragon dances, huge markets, food and drink stalls and other entertainment. It's also traditional to settle outstanding debts, finish old business, give children gifts of money in little red envelopes and begin the New Year afresh.
