Firecrackers are an important part of many Asian celebrations and the business of making them used to form a large part of Macau's economy. Out of this sprang the annual Macau International Fireworks Display Contest which attracts pyrotechnic display teams from all over the world. Visitors are treated to weekly shows with the final climatic show taking place on National Day, 1 October.
