This festival, one of the biggest booze-ups in Asia, has been held every year since 1991, and aims to promote friendship and encourage economic and cultural exchanges between the people of Qingdao and visitors from all over China, Asia and further afield. Expect Chinese beer by the barrel-load, but also fireworks shows and military parades complete with brass bands, troops, and arrays of colourful flags, balloons, and festooned vehicles. The "Summer of Qingdao" coincides with the festival, and features a mix of shows, sports competitions, professional seminars, sand sculpture contests, and calligraphy and painting exhibitions
