Canada
It started in 1979 as a way of celebrating Canada's unique northern climate and culture. Now Winterlude, the self-proclaimed "greatest winter celebration in North America", is enjoyed by more than 650,000 fun-seekers each year. In short, it consists of a sub-zero extravaganza of family entertainment in the snow. Visitors come from far and wide to take part in Winterlude activities such as the Rideau Canal Skateway, or an amazing playground made of snow. Thousands enjoy the magnificent sculptures of snow and ice, the music shows at the Snowbowl and Snowflake Kingdom, and skating on the world's largest skating rink, in the centre of the city
