The town of Jasper began life as a tented encampment for railway workers. Now it is a mountain resort and a centre for the largest of the Canadian Rockies National Parks. Jasper has 4,200 square miles of mountains and lakes threaded by cross-country trails. In January they throw a snow festival to banish the winter blues: a two week programme that includes just about anything as long as it's fun.
