2/01/2009 - 2/28/2009Quebec Winter Carnival
Quebec,
Canada
Since the middle of the last century the Quebec Carnival has been one of the largest and most popular winter celebrations in the world, attended by nearly a million people every year. An international snow sculpture event, a free introduction to alpine skiing for children, provincial dogsled racing through the streets of Old Quebec and a canoe race on the St Lawrence River are among the many attractions. The Carnival aims to achieve a balance between tradition and modernity, national heritage and fun. A highly diverse programme runs for 17 consecutive days and its activities reach a vast clientele. Opening ceremonies, a Chinese martial arts demonstration, a Calgary flapjack breakfast, music concerts, grand balls and painting seminars are just a few examples of the entertainment and attractions on offer. The event has a long history with the first large winter Carnival in Quebec taking place back in 1894
