8/01/2008 - 8/31/2008Kitikmeot Northern Games
kitikmeot,
Canada
Up here in the frozen North, sports and competitions test the endurance and practical skills essential for survival. During the Northern Games in the community of Kitikmeot, time-honoured tests are played out in a modern context. Traditional games include Alaskan hipkick and one arm reach. More practical competitions are the championships for Good Man and Good Woman. These contests include events such as tea boiling, duck plucking and making bannock scones (a nutritious flat bread that used to be a staple for hunters). The games culminate in a feast of northern delicacies for both spectators and athletes. Rivalries are set aside while everyone enjoys the communal pleasures of Arctic cuisine
