10/03/2008 - 10/05/2008Yukon International Storytelling Festival
Whitehorse,
Canada
The oral tradition has flourished for centuries in the Canadian North, but the first Storytelling Festival in the Yukon took place in 1988. Storytellers from all over the world travel to Yukon each year for this important festival that helps to keep oral traditions alive. Storytellers are always encouraged to tell in their first language and a summary or translation is appended in English. Additional countries and cultures have been represented at Yukon and each year sees more and more storytellers gathering in Whitehorse to celebrate the North's rich storytelling tradition under the midnight sun. The festival combines storytelling with costume, dance, theatre, drums, mime, and music so that visitors are exposed to a unique cultural experience.
