5/01/2009 - 6/01/2009Festival of Roses
Karlovo,
Bulgaria
The celebrated 'Valley of the Roses' lies midway between Sofia on the coast, and the Balkan Range. In late May and early June the rose-picking season starts before sunrise each day. The crop, used by all the top perfumeries, is of immense value to the country's economy and is often referred to as 'Bulgaria's Gold'. Harvesting is also the time of the Festival of Roses, celebrated with carnivals, processions, folk songs and dances, in the towns of Karlovo and Kazanluk. Karlovo retains many examples of Bulgarian Revival architecture in the old part of town, and has enjoyed a reputation for craft production, braid weaving and rose distillery. Rose festivals take place both here and in the smaller town of Kazanluk.
