The Rio Marathon has a somewhat chequered history - it has been cancelled in the past because of sponsorship problems - but when it happens, it is spectacular. A course weaving through city streets, with mountains rising inland from a fabulous shoreline makes this one of the more picturesque marathons in the world. Runners see parts of famous neighbourhoods like Praia da Reserva, Leblon, Ipanema, Copacabana, Botafogo and Flamengo along the way. Prizes are awarded in various categories and there is also a half-marathon event. Crowds in excess of 100,000 turn out to watch.
