10/12/2008 - 10/12/2008Our Lady of Aparecida
Countrywide,
Brazil
The Patron Saint of Brazil is Our Lady of Aparecida and her day is both a national holiday and religious festival. Aparecida is a city in the state of Sao Paulo in the north of Brazil and the place where a cult has developed surrounding the statue of "Nossa Senhora", the Virgin. Upwards of seven million pilgrims come here each year, but on the saint's day alone, more than 100,000 of the faithful turn up to pay their respects. Similar scenes of devotion, albeit on a smaller scale, are witnessed all over Brazil
