12/31/2008 - 1/01/2009New Year's Eve
Rio de Janeiro,
Brazil
In Rio, the New Year's Eve bash is second only to the carnival celebrations later in the year. Whilst parties take place all over the city, it is estimated that about 2 million revellers head to this one on Copacabana Beach to welcome in the New Year. The celebrations have religious overtones and many dress in white, and light candles along the beach, making for a truly spectacular sight. Offerings of flowers, perfume and rice are made to Lemanja, the Goddess of the Sea, and are cast adrift on model boats. On the stroke of midnight the sky bursts alight with an incredible fireworks display and partying often continues right through the night. Rio's New Year's Eve celebrations seem to grow each year and are fast becoming one of the major parties in the world
