Health CareThe dust and heat may cause problems for some people. Visitors should use sun protection, especially due to Botswana’s high altitude. The public health system is good. All main towns have chemists, and pharmaceutical supplies are readily available. Health insurance is essential.
Note1Risk of typhoid fever exists throughout the region, especially if traveling outside cities. Botswana is practically free of poliomyelitis.
2Malaria risk exists from November to May/June in the northern part of the country (Boteti, Chobe, Ngamiland, Okavango and Tutume districts/subdistricts), predominantly in the malignant
falciparum form. Some of the
falciparum-related cases have been reported as chloroquine-resistant; in which case, the recommended prophylaxis in risk areas is mefloquine.
3A yellow fever vaccination certificate is required from all travelers over one year of age traveling from infected areas.
