Celebrated in many Hispanic countries, the festival of the "Virgen de la Candelaria" has special significance in this small Bolivian town on the shore of Lake Titicaca. Here known as the "Dark Virgin of the Lake", and holding the exalted position of Patroness Of Bolivia, she is revered for a series of miracles. The sleepy town fills with people in the days leading up to the festival, when there are parades, an abundance of colourful native costumes, music, drinking and celebrating. During the fiesta of the statue of the Virgin leaves its home in the ornate, Moorish-style cathedral to be paraded through the streets and squares of this attractive town
