6/21/2008 - 6/22/2008Aymara New Year
La Paz,
Bolivia
Whilst many people tend to think of New Year's Day as 1 January, much of the world does not. For the Aymara people of the Central Andes - one of the biggest indigenous groups of Bolivia - the southern hemisphere's winter solstice is the start of the new agricultural cycle. It is a day of solemn local tradition supported by more exuberant festivities such as bonfires and fireworks. The key moment is sunrise, when the first rays strike the Puerta de Sol (Gateway of the Sun) at the ancient pre-Inca ruins of Tiahuanaco, high above the city of La Paz.
