11/19/2008 - 11/19/2008Garifuna Settlement Day
Belize
A national holiday, Garifuna Settlement Day remembers the liberation of African slaves upon their arrival in Belize from St Vincent in 1832. The lively celebration illustrates the devotion and enthusiasm of the Garifuna people in keeping their culture alive through music, dance and food. Whether it is the pulsating sounds of the beating drums, the brightly coloured dresses and dashikis, or the soulful, rhythmic dancing, the Garifuna people have left their unmistakable mark on the cultural landscape of Belize
