Each December the European Chrismas Market sets up in Brussels' Grand Place, one of the most stunning market squares in the whole of Europe. Hundreds of stalls are erected selling novel gift items from around the world. Culinary choices are the most numerous with regional and national Christmas specialties on sale (and to sample), including flat hard cakes known as 'klaasjes' and 'speculoos', a hard gingerbread moulded in the form of St Nicholas. Other typical treats include panettone (Christmas cake) from Italy and speciality sausages from Germany. Visitors can also enjoy a glass or two of the various mulled wines on offer; choose from Scandinavian glogg, Austrian gluhwein or French vin chaud. There is also a nativity scene display and choirs perform Christmas carols to really get shoppers into the festive spirit.
