The town of Jasper began life as a tented encampment for railway workers. Now it is a mountain resort and a centre for the largest of the Canadian Rockies National Parks. Jasper has 4,200 square miles of mountains and lakes threaded by cross-country trails. In January they throw a snow festival to banish the winter blues: a two week programme that includes just about anything as long as it's fun. The many activities include: Snow Sculptures, Party in the Park, Avalanche Safety Day, Family Fun Race, Scavenger Hunt, Yuk Yuk's Comedy Nite, Avalanche Pub Night, Mountain Triathlon, History Mystery Challenge, Chilli Cook Off, Children's Movie Matinee, Fun, Fat & Forty Race and Name that Scotch.
