If we had to pick one province in all of Canada to fall off the grid in, it would be New Brunswick. Not only does it exemplify Canadian hospitality, but it also seems to attract the carefree spirits who love exploring the outdoors as much as we do. And, like any adventurous soul, staying at a standard hotel just doesn't cut it.

There’s something to be said for bed and breakfasts. All the comforts of home with the chance to pick a local’s brain about the area, and, of course, a breakfast fit for a king to power the day.

We scoured the Internet, read the reviews, and did all the homework for you. Based on location, activities, and amenities, here are the top five New Brunswick B&Bs to check-out.

Something for everyone: The Colonel’s In

You couldn’t get closer to downtown or the St. John River if you tried. Near several prime walking trails right along the river bank in Fredericton, you’ll feel like a local in no time when you stay with Cindy and Ian. At the Colonel’s In, expect breathtaking sunsets every evening and a breakfast that’ll make you want to wake up early every morning. But be warned, the three-bedroom bungalow books up fast so be sure to plan ahead if you want to stay here!

The family base camp: Tidal Watch Inn at St. Martins

Just like the name implies, overnight guests can expect morning and evening views of the tides rolling in at the nearby Bay of Fundy. What they don't anticipate is the quick drive to Fundy National Park and the Fundy Trail, how easily they’ll fall in love with the town of St. Martin’s, and the bed and breakfast to be run by a former homicide detective. For the best views, book the Baywatch and Eagle’s Nest rooms, each of which have their own private baths and Jacuzzis. And for the kids? They’ll love having space to sprawl out in (with their own bathroom and separate beds!) in the Carson Room.

The historic retreat: Homeport in Saint John

If you want the best views of all of Saint John, the Homeport Bed and Breakfast is just what the doctor ordered. Overlooking the Bay of Fundy and its historic port, the 10-room bed and breakfast has an amazing view of the Saint John skyline and is the only five-star inn in Saint John. While the twin homes have exchanged hands several times since they were built in 1858, the extensive history is quite fascinating and the service hasn't missed a beat.

Your home away from home: Brennan’s Bed and Breakfast

With a great location, tons of history, and amazing hospitality, Brennan’s Bed and Breakfast in downtown Fredericton is a winner in our book. A historic Victorian home, each of the five bedrooms offers top amenities with a blend of charming, modern décor. There’s one with a fireplace and air-jet tub perfect for honeymooners, but families will prefer the room with turret seating and the option for a single bed en suite for the kids. After you’ve helped yourself to the daily four-course breakfast, be sure to take a walk along the river and you’ll fall in love with Fredericton over and over again.

A honeymooners paradise: Cote’s Bed and Breakfast

A little farther afield than the other bed and breakfasts on our list, Cote’s in Grand Falls is a town known for its outdoor activities and waterfall views. Catering mostly to couples, to make your visit even more special, ask for the romance package with fresh flowers, champagne, and breakfast in bed.
