This picturesque square, surrounded by restored 17th- and 18th-century buildings, is one of the oldest inhabited areas on the continent. The 1686 bust of King Louis XIV gives the Royale its name. Once the town marketplace and business center, the square is now the scene of folk dances and impromptu concerts. The Église Notre-Dame-Des-Victoires, the oldest stone church in Québec (1688), is worth a peek inside. The model boat suspended from the ceiling was a votive offering from early settlers who hoped to ensure safe voyages.
