Every December, this fairy-tale ice hotel is rebuilt 30 minutes west of downtown Québec City, only to melt in the spring. Novelty aside, this is a working lodging. With four-foot walls acting as windbreakers, the 32 rooms and suites maintain a relatively toasty inside temperature of 23 to 28 Fahrenheit. Beds, also made of blocks of ice, are topped with mummy-style insulated sleeping bags-you will dream of polar bears. Heated bathrooms are in an annex down the corridor. Dinner is available in the Auberge Duchesnay's Bistro Le Quatre Temps. If the low temperatures and high prices discourage you, the hotel is open to the public during the day, 10-8, with $11 guided tours starting at 11 a.m. (open January through April).
