Advice for Solo Women Travelers

More often than not, solo women travelers are given a list of precautions to advise by when traveling due to the thoroughfares of our society. However, this list is actually an excellent rule of thumb for all travelers and - unfortunately - many women will misconstrue it as attempt to call out that they're being treated differently for being females. This is far from the case. We are a world of many peoples, nations and colors and wherever you go, plain common sense continues to have universally successful results, male or female. As women, we're not being called out unfairly; moreover, we're being recognized for striking out on our own. The exciting fact for female travelers is that - for all practical purposes - men discovered our world and now we have the opportunity to create our own maps. By retracing trails unprinted by women, we have a chance to go and discover our own version of the world.

Take the tips listed with enthusiasm, knowing that you're creating a new globe for all female pioneers:

  • Carry with Caution   As women, we tend to carry more personal belongings with us. A money belt, double-strapped bag, and a frontpack are all good tools in keeping your possessions close but staying alert is the true key. Take note of your surroundings and keep your senses open to the activity near you. This will ensure that both your belongings - and you - stay safe.

  • Set Safety First   There is nothing wrong with taking additional precaution by staying in groups and including trusted male companions late at night. Being a proud female traveler is completely different than being an arrogant female traveler. The tried and true rule is that there is always more safety in numbers.

  • Act as a Compass   Navigational keys are crucial on the road and a sense of direction will build confidence and alleviate unneeded stress. Always choose to study maps, read guidebooks and utilize fellow travelers comments, suggestions and experiences related to your next "point of content." This will avoid looking, or being lost, misdirected or nervous and - in turn - will avoid you undesirable circumstances.

  • Be a Roman   Wherever you roam, trek, climb or relax; honor the local ways. While no way is the right way, those who call your chosen destination home deserve respect for opening their doors to you. This will not only ensure an utmost high level of rapport between you and those you meet, it will also secure proper messages of communication: messages of respect, integrity and reverence.

While it is true that many women continue to be suppressed in comparison to the ways of our western cultures, you have an amazing opportunity to educate the world on the high standard in which women should be treated. As a solo female traveler, you will become the ultimate teacher of human rights. You are a new pioneer - carry your passport with pride.
