Leanne Chance to Gloat in Switzerland
By Leanne Mayer
Chris, Nick, and I had been backpacking through Europe last summer and one of the places we visited was Interlaken, Switzerland. Not only is it a beautiful town and place to visit, but there are also many adventure sports to participate in. I wanted to try something exciting, but not too crazy, so the first adventure we decided to try was river rafting. Of course, both boys made fun of me and told me I would be the first one to fall out of the boat. River rafting was a good choice, but we also got a lot more than we bargained for. You see, Chris gets motion sickness. And after fifteen minutes of being crammed into a van with twenty other people in damp and smelly wet suits, he started throwing up even before our adventure began. After Chris felt better and the rest of the group finished laughing at him, we learned all the safety procedures and prepared for our journey down the river. Since Chris and Nick were the only two boys in our boat, the instructor put them in the front, since it is the hardest place to paddle. If it had been any other two boys, this may have been a good idea, but this was not the case. During the first rough spot our boat hit, Nick immediately fell out of the boat. And when we came to a calm area and were just floating down the river, Chris had to hang his head over the side of the boat because his motion sickness kicked in again. I ended up being the only person out of the three of us who didn't cause any trouble and I definitely think that instructor will think twice before he automatically puts two boys in the front of a boat again!
