The restaurants below have been grouped into four different pricing categories:
$$$$ (over CHF 110)
$$$ (CHF 80 to CHF 110)
$$ (CHF 50 to CHF 80)
$ (up to CHF 50)
These prices are for a three-course meal for one and include tax, service and half a bottle of house wine or equivalent.

La Terrasse
One of two delightful dining rooms at the Bellevue Palace (see Hotels), La Terrasse is the place to go for Bern’s most refined and imaginative gourmet cuisine. The restaurant offers sophisticated dining at its most charming and exquisite,
along with lovely views of the Alps in the background. The cuisine is decidedly modern but with roots in classic Swiss and continental traditions.

Hotel Bellevue Palace, 3-5 Kochergasse

Price: $$$$

Jack’s Brasserie
One of Bern’s best restaurants, the bistro-style Jack’s Brasserie is conveniently located opposite the railway station, and offers a busy and cosmopolitan atmosphere that somehow also manages to be calm, friendly and relaxing. The food is consistently of top quality. The fish dishes are particularly exciting, although the Wiener schnitzel, a house specialty, is sublime.

Price: $$$-$$$$

Schwellenmätteli
This is a trendy and popular place on the bank of the River Aare. Dubbed the ‘Riviera Restaurant’ on account of its island-like setting by the river, it consists of three buildings, each with its own particular atmosphere. The Terrasse, standing right above the river, is an excellent restaurant with bar and lounge. The cuisine is mainly a blend of local and continental elements.

Dalmaziquai 11

Price: $$$

Altes Tramdepot Brauerei
This restaurant and microbrewery has an excellent location by Bern’s bear pits and attracts quite a lot of tourists. The restaurant offers great views of the Old Town from its terrace, and it gives guests the chance to see both the in-house brewery in action and the chefs at work in the open kitchen. The atmosphere is lively, and the food is hearty, flavorsome and accompanied by one of the home-brewed beers on offer.

Grosser Muristalden 6
Tel: (031) 368 1415.

Klötzlikeller
Allegedly the oldest tavern in Bern, the Klötzlikeller can trace its history back to 1635. While it is commonly referred to as a wine cellar, it is today just as much a welcoming eatery offering hearty local fare interspersed with a number of international dishes. It is a nice place to eat and drink well at a reasonable price.

Gerechtigkeitsgasse 62
Tel: (031) 311 7456.

Nightlife:

Bars: You can’t really go wrong with Lorenzini, Hotelgasse 10, since the place has three different bars, a music bar, a cocktail bar and a New York-style wine bar. Chances are that you will enjoy yourself in all of them. For a place with a slightly older audience, Arcady Bar, Bahnhofsplatz 11, is a relaxed, welcoming bar where people come to socialise and enjoy a drink or two to the accompaniment of live piano music. A trendy and stylish bar in the Old Town, Eclipse Bar, Gurtengasse 6, attracts a younger and rather chic clientele, and tends to get livelier the later it get. The spacious Kornhauskeller (website: www.kornhauskeller.ch), with its large gallery, is among Bern’s most sophisticated bars and something of an attraction in its own right. Well worth visiting. Leichtsinn, Kornhausplatz 10, is a trendy venue with a sushi bar and outdoor seating on the ground floor and a lounge on the upper floor. In summer, the sophisticated outdoor area nicely rounds off the seating options.

Clubs:
Wasserwerk Club, Wasserwerkgasse 5 (website: www.wasserwerkclub.ch), is a Bern classic that has hosted acts like The Prodigy, Faithless and Moby, and still attracts serious clubbers and international DJs. Bierhübeli, Neubrückstrasse 43 (website: www.bierhuebeli.ch), is both a club and a concert hall, and guests can enjoy concerts as well as DJ-spun music here. Many international artists have performed at the Bierhübeli over the years. AnderLand, Mühlenplatz 11 (website: www.gay-bern.ch/hab), is Bern’s club for gays and lesbians.

Live Music:
In Marians Jazzroom, Hotel Innere Enge, Engestrasse 54 (tel: (031) 309 6111; website: www.mariansjazzroom.ch), Bern has arguably one of Europe’s finest jazz clubs. The venue constantly attracts leading international performers of blues and jazz as well as a steady stream of fans who enjoy the music. The repertoire ranges from jazz and blues to gospel, R&B and soul. Another great place for live jazz music is The Mahogany Hall, Klösterlistutz 18 (tel: (031) 328 5200; website: www.mahogany.ch), which has a lovely club atmosphere. For bigger concerts in Bern the indoor Bern Arena, Mingerstrasse 6 (tel: (031) 340 1111), is sometimes used. The really big international rock and pop stars perform at the Stade de Suisse football stadium, Papiermühlestrasse 71 (tel: (031) 344 8888; website: www.stadedesuisse.ch).
