Getting There By Air:

Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport (OPO)
Tel: 229 432 400.
Website: www.ana.pt

The Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport is located 11km (7 miles) north of Porto city center.

The facilities at the very modern airport include ATMs, a bank office, currency exchange services, a post office, Internet access and a massage service. The airport also
has several shops, including fashion and accessories stores, duty-free shops, convenience stores, a jewelry shop, a delicatessen, a pharmacy and a couple of outlets selling souvenirs, books and newspapers. There are also several bars and cafes as well as a restaurant.

Car rental is available at the airport, and Porto is only 10-15 minutes away by car. Otherwise there are frequent bus and metro departures from the airport to central Porto. Both the buses and trains run every half hour or so and take around half an hour to get to the city center.

Getting There By Road:

Porto is well connected to Portugal’s national motorway network. The city is linked to three motorways: A1 Lisbon, with a connection to the Algarve; A3 Valença (Minho), with a connection to Galicia, and A4 Amarante (Trás-os-Montes), with a connection to Bragança. It takes about two hours to drive from Porto to Galicia and about five hours to the Algarve.

The national motoring association is Automóvel Club de Portugal (ACP) (tel: 808 502 502; website: www.acp.pt), and it can offer assistance to motorists belonging to an automobile club with whom the ACP has a reciprocal agreement.

Emergency breakdown service:
ACP (tel: 707 509 510).

There are several bus companies operating in and from Porto. Rede Expressos (tel: 213 581 460; website: www.rede-expressos.pt) has a wide network of buses going to most cities in Portugal. Their buses depart from the Paragem Atlântico terminal, Rua Alexandre Herculano 370. Internorte, Praça da Galiza 96 (tel: 226 052 420; website: www.internorte.pt) and Eurolines, Terminal Rodoviário, Campo 24 de Agosto 215 (tel: 225 189 303; website: www.eurolinesportugal.com) operate coach services between Porto and several other cities across Europe.

Getting There By Rail:

Campanhã Station, Largo da Estação de Campanhã (tel: 221 052 700) is the city’s main railway station with international, national and regional services. The beautiful San Bento Station, Praça Almeida Garret (tel: 229 019 517) is located in the city center and offers suburban and regional services. Several trains link these two stations. A third station, Contumil, Rua da Estação de Contumil (tel: 221 052 107) is located just north of Campanhã Station. Suburban trains depart for Braga, Guimarães and Marco de Canaveses. For more information, contact the railway operator CP (tel: 213 185 990 or 808 208 208; website: www.cp.pt).

Getting Around:

Porto has an excellent public transport network including metro, tram, bus, suburban trains and a funicular. The Metro do Porto (tel: 808 205 060; website: www.metrodoporto.pt) has five lines (one of which connects the city center with the airport), and services are frequent and reliable. The city’s comprehensive bus network, as well as one tram route, is operated by STCP (tel: 0808 200 166; website: www.stcp.pt). Suburban and local trains, including the ones linking the city’s two main railways stations, are operated by CP (tel: 808 208 208; website: www.cp.pt).

The Andante Tour, a travel pass valid for transport all around the Porto metropolitan area, using the metro, the STCP buses or the CP suburban trains, can be bought at Andante stores, at Porto’s tourism offices and at all the STCP and train ticket offices. One-day and three-day cards are available. For more information, contact Linhandante (tel: 808 200 444; website: www.linhandante.com).
