Bus 23 connects the airport to the city center, terminating at the main railway station, though there are also buses from the airport to various destinations across France. Metered taxis are also available outside the terminal. Ensure the meter is switched on or agree a fare in advance.
Getting There By Road:While high-speed trains (TGV) generally remain the quickest way around France, the road network is also good with a number of highways on hand to connect Nice with the rest of the country. The A8 heads westwards towards Marseille, and eastwards towards the Italian border. The N98 takes a more scenic coastal route east, while the 202 cuts north through the mountains. The main bus station (
gare routière) is on the edge of the city center at 5 boulevard Jean Jaurès (tel: 0892 701 206). One of the main long distance bus companies is
Eurolines (website:
www.eurolines.fr). Services run to many major French towns and cities as well as to the neighboring countries. The minimum age for driving is 18 years, and drivers must carry a national driving license, the car’s registration document and a red warning triangle at all times.
Emergency breakdown service: SOS Dépannage (tel: (04) 9700 0333).
Getting There By Rail:Gare Nice Ville (tel: (4) 9387 0707), avenue Thiers, is located just over 1km (0.6 miles) from the Mediterranean on the edge of the city center. The station services destinations all along the French Mediterranean coastline, as well as delving further north into the rest of France and across the border into Italy and Spain. The company running most services is state operator
SNCF (tel: 0805 700 805; website:
www.sncf.fr).
Les Chemin de Fer de la Provence (tel: (04) 9703 8080; website:
www.trainprovence.com) also run trips to Digne-les-Bains in the mountains.
Getting Around:
Public TransportThere is no metro, but a comprehensive
bus network is operated by the local authorities through the Riviera-wide
Ligne D’Azur (tel: 0810 061 006; website:
www.lignedazur.com). Most city routes run from 0600 or 0700 until around 2100, with a limited night service of four routes then taking over. As well as running all the buses within the Nice metropolitan area,
Ligne D’Azur also connects Nice with over 20 other Riviera towns with single fares, day tickets and carnets of 10 tickets all available. Tickets can be purchased at many newspaper kiosks or single tickets can be purchased on board. The new
tram routes operate a limited service from Las Planas to Pont Michel from 0525 until 0135, with expansion plans currently underway.
TaxisTaxis can be hailed on the street or at the ranks at the railway station and the Promenades des Anglais, as well as in the old town. Pre-booked taxis can be ordered from
Central Taxi Riviera (tel: (04) 9313 7878). Ensure that the meter is switched on or agree a price in advance for all journeys.
Car HireThere is little need to hire a car in Nice as the city is quite compact and it can often be quicker to walk when making journeys around central Nice. International car hire companies do have offices at the airport and also in the city center. By the railway station on avenue Thiers there are offices of
Avis (tel: (04) 9387 9011
or 0820 611 631; website:
www.avis.fr),
Europcar (tel: 0825 829 021; website:
www.europcar.com) and
Hertz (tel: (04) 9703 0125; website:
www.hertz.fr). The minimum age for car hire varies from 21 to 25 years. Drivers must have held a national driving license for at least one year. It is usually requested that the cost is paid for with the driver’s credit card. Driving in the city center can be intimidating as Nice has heavy traffic and locals can drive erratically.
Bicycle HireNice Location Rent, 12 rue de Belgique, is a local company that can organize bike hire (tel: (04) 9382 4271; website:
www.nicealocationrent.com).
