York has many of the usual high street chains, mainly along Coney Street and Parliament Street, and is, in particular, a mecca for designer shopping, with streets like Petergate and Davygate sporting brands such as Vivienne Westwood. However, it is best advised to head straight for the little independent shops that York is celebrated for. A free shopping guide offers a choice of five walking trails and is available from the visitor information centers or online (website:

York is famous for
its chocolate, with legendary ties to the famous
Rowntree confectionary name, and the headquarters of both
Nestlé and
Terry’s. But none of these can match the succulent treats offered at
Monk Bar Chocolatiers, 1 Goodramgate and 7 The Shambles. To continue the food theme, a trip to either
Betty’s, 6-8 St Helen’s Square, or
Little Betty’s, 46 Stonegate, is a must; the company’s famous teas, breads and cakes make good souvenirs.
Being a historical city, and being one known for championing the arts, it is little wonder that York seems filled with both antique and design shops. Gillygate, especially, is crammed with shops showcasing local talent, from interior design to arts and crafts. The contemporary jewelry of
Azendi, 20 Colliergate, is gorgeously unique. From the contemporary to the old, the
Red House Antiques Center, 1 Duncombe Place, is an 18th-century townhouse, which just happens to be one of York’s premier antique shops.
York’s daily
Newgate Market, situated in Newgate, adjacent to The Shambles, also has over 100 stalls, with particular emphasis on local produce.
