Getting There By Air:

Antwerp Airport
Tel: (03) 285 6500.
Website: www.antwerp-airport.be

Antwerp’s tiny no-frills airport lies 7km (4.5 miles) south east of the city center.

Bus 14 (tel: (03) 218 1411; website: www.delijn.be) runs to the central station every 30 minutes or so from outside the airport. Taxis also wait here.

Brussels Airport
Tel: (02) 753 7753.
Website: www.brusselsairport.be

Another option is
to fly into Brussels Airport, which is only 40km (25 miles) from Antwerp. A dedicated Airport Express bus runs between here and de Keyserlei (near Centraal Station), every hour, from around 0600 to 2200. The journey takes 50 minutes.

Getting There By Road:

Antwerp has good motorway links with Brussels to the south, and to major Dutch cities in the north, as well as with the Channel port at Zeebrugge, where ferries from the UK arrive in Belgium.

The main Belgian automobile association is the Touring Club de Belgique (TCB) (tel: 070 344 777; website: www.touring.be).

Most coaches/long-distance buses arrive and depart from the station on Franklin Rooseveltplaats, a short distance northwest of Centraal station. Information is available from a kiosk in Centraal Station (see Getting Around). De Lijn (tel: (03) 218 1411; website: www.delijn.be) is the main operator.

Eurolines (tel: 0871 781 8181, in the UK; website: www.eurolines.com) operates a daily service from London Victoria coach station to Antwerp via the Dover-Calais ferry or the Le Shuttle train, stopping at Bruges and Ghent. The city can also be reached from around Europe on the Eurolines network, direct or via Brussels or Amsterdam.

Emergency breakdown service: Touring Club de Belgique (tel: (02) 286 3327).

Getting There By Rail:

Eurostar (tel: 0870 518 6186, in the UK; website: www.eurostar.com) runs from London to Brussels Midi in 1 hour 51 minutes. From here your Eurostar ticket allows a free connection to anywhere in Belgium. Fast frequent services take around 40 minutes from Brussels to Antwerp Centraal.

The Belgian train operator is NMBS (tel: 025 28 28 28; website: www.b-rail.be). The express Thalys service (website: www.thalys.com), which runs between Paris, Brussels and Amsterdam, stops at the Antwerpen-Berchem station, 4km (2.5 miles) from the center of town.

Getting Around:

Public Transport
De Lijn (tel: (03) 218 1411; website: www.delijn.be) is the city transport company operating a regular and efficient bus and tram service in and around the city. A few tram lines run partly underground and this is referred to as the Metro system. Useful trams for visitors are 2 and 15 which run between Groenplaats, at the heart of the old town, and the Centraal (railway) station. Most bus lines also begin outside Centraal station. Options are single tickets (valid for any journey within one hour), a carnet of 10 singles, a one-day pass, a three-day pass or a one-week pass. These are available from the tourist office and a public transport kiosk inside Centraal station (tel: 070 220 200).

Taxis
Antwerp Taxi (tel: (03) 238 3838; website: www.antwerp-tax.be) and Metropole (tel: (03) 231 31 31; website: www.metropolis.be) are both reliable operators.

Car Hire
You won’t need a car to get around Antwerp itself, but if you want to explore further afield Hertz (tel: (03) 239 29 21; website: www.hertz.com) have an office at the airport. Other major and local car hire companies, including Avis (tel: (03) 218 9496; website: www.avis.com), Budget (tel: (03) 213 7960; website: www.budget.be) and Europcar (tel: (03) 206 7444; website: www.europcar.be), have offices in the city center and all major car hire companies have offices at Brussels Airport.

Bicycle Hire
Cycling is a popular way of getting around. Try Antwerp Bikes on Lijnwaadmarkt (tel: (03) 290 4962; website: www.antwerpbikes.be) or De Ligfiets, Steenhouwersvest 25 (tel: (03) 293 7456; website: www.ligfiets.be); many hotels also have bicycles available to their guests.
