Music: The largest of Salzburg’s two festival halls, the Grosses Festspielhaus, Hofstallgasse (tel: (0662) 804 5500; website: www.salzburgfestival.at), with a capacity of over 2,000, is the city’s premier venue for classical music, hosting operas and concerts all year round.

With over 320 concerts a year, the Salzburg Palace Concerts (tel: (0662) 848 586; website: www.salzburger-schlosskonzerte.at) is one of the world’s largest concert series, held in the beautiful Marble Hall at the Mirabell Palace. There are classical concerts all year round also in the elegant State Rooms at the Hohensalzburg Fortress (tel: (0662) 8424 3011; website: www.salzburgburgen.at) and works by Mozart performed at the Mozarteum, Schwarzstrasse 26 (tel: (0662) 873 154; website: www.mozarteum.at). Big rock concerts or other large-scale cultural or entertainment events tend to be staged at the Salzburg Arena (tel: (0662) 24040; website: www.salzburgarena.at), 4km (2.5 miles) north of the city center off the A1.

Theater: The biggest of Salzburg’s permanent theaters is the Salzburg City Theater - the Salzburger Landestheater, Schwarzstrasse 22 (tel: (0662) 871 512; website: www.salzburger-landestheater.at), has been home to performing arts since long before Mozart, and today its program ranges from opera and ballet to drama.

Film: Das Kino, Giselakai 11 (tel: (0662) 873 100; website: www.daskino.at), near the Staatsbrücke, screens small-budget, independent and foreign-language films, and Mozartkino, Kurt Giebisch, Kaigasse 33 (tel: (0662) 842 222; website: www.mozartkino.at), is a small, old-fashioned cinema in the Old Town.
