Grand Ole Opry

Grand Ole Opry is the world’s longest running live radio show, and an American icon. It was first broadcast as a weekly barn dance show on November 28 1925, at a time when the radio was fast growing in popularity. In the early days, the show followed a classical music program, and radio announcer George D Hay joked that the Grand Opera that listeners had just heard would be followed by performances of the ‘Grand Ole Opry’ – Hay adopted this impromptu name and it stuck. Within a few years the show became so popular that thousands of fans flocked to see it performed live. After a succession of venues, it finally settled in the specially designed 4400 seat Grand Ole Opry House in Nashville in 1974, from where it has been broadcast ever since. The show is broadcast on Tuesday afternoons and Friday and Saturday evenings.
