Loch Ness

Loch Ness in the heart of Inverness is the largest body of freshwater in the British Isles and has a greater volume than all the lakes and reservoirs in England and Wales. But it is not its size that has gained the loch its worldwide notoriety; Loch Ness is famed for the stories of the Loch Ness Monster that is said to live in its murky depths. The first sighting dates back to 565AD when St Columba is said to have seen a strange ‘water beast’ on the River Ness. The legend of the Loch Ness Monster has endured ever since with images of ‘Nessie’ apparently caught in now famous photos in 1951 and again in 1955. There are plenty of viewing points around the loch and there’s an official Loch Ness Circular Car Tour that visitors can take. There’s an exhibition dedicated to the myths and legends of the loch at the The Loch Ness Centre & Exhibition Experience. The loch is surrounded by some of the finest Highland scenery in Scotland that’s peppered with castles, forts, waterfalls and stunning valleys.
