Scottish Parliament Overview
The original Scottish Parliament was abolished in 1707 under the Act of Union to form the Parliament of Great Britain. The Scottish Parliament was reestablished in 1998 under the Scotland Act with the first session of the new Parliament held in 1999 at its brand new Parliament Building which lies at the end of Edinburgh's famous Royal Mile by Holyrood Park. Designed by Enric Miralles who was inspired by the dramatic landscape that surrounds the site, the striking building is made from a mix of steel, oak and granite. Sustainability and minimal impact were key factors in the design, and the building is famed as one of the most progressive and innovative buildings in Britain today. Access to the building is free but there is a charge for a guided tour.
