San Diego Zoo Overview

San Diego Zoo is undoubtedly the city of San Diego's most famous attraction. Located in the beautiful Balboa Park, just northeast of the city center, the zoo is considered to be one of the most impressive in the world with the largest collection of animals, birds and reptiles in North America. Today, the San Diego Zoo houses more than 4000 animals from 800 different species and also has a large collection of more than 6500 species of plants. Balboa Park itself is home to one of the largest groups of museums in the United States, including the Museum of Man, San Diego Museum of Art, the Museum of San Diego History, the National History Museum and the Aerospace Museum. There are around 15,000 trees in the park, including palms, pines and eucalyptus, the most famous tree in the park is the Moreton Bay fig, located near the National History Museum and planted in around 1915.
