Samarian Gorge (Samaria) Overview

Regarded as one of Europe's greatest natural wonders, the Samarian Gorge is a beautiful 18km- (11 mile) hike through the Samaria National Park in Crete's White Mountains. The gorge is believed to be the longest in Europe and is home to beautiful flora and fauna and dramatic rock formations. There are several churches and chapels, including the church dedicated to Saint Maria of Egypt, found in the village of Samaria and dating back to 1379, where the name Sa(int)maria comes from. After a long day's hike, visitors can relax on beaches at the end of the gorge before taking a boat back along the coast to embark on their return journey to Chania.
Air: Chania International Airport. Water: Boat: Services to Souyia or Hora Sfakion (from Ayia Roumeli), then bus service back to Chania. Road: Coach: Many visitors book trips through tour operators. Bus: Public services. Car: It is not advisable to travel by car to the entrance of the gorge, as visitors must return to their starting point to pick up their car.
